Notifications

You'll see the notification links in the boards. You can subscribe/unsubscribe to the campaign board or a specific topic - however the emails are not going out yet. The subscription will be valid though when it does start sending emails.

I set it so anyone can subscribe (except non-logged in people/guests). So you can follow a campaign even if you are not playing in it - provided it is not a private campaign.

I signed myself up to notify for one board on my campaign, then when I tried to setup notification for my OOC board I got this:

Error: SUBSCRIBE Duplicate entry '13-0' for key 1

Almost ready - should be good by tonight. The notifications work but I need to make sure you don't get notified of a message you are not supposed to see - from the groups. You wouldn't be able to view it but no sense in telling you about it.

OK, the notification system is live. Give it a whirl. If you have the ability to, try with certain group selections. If you are not in a group that can read the post you should be getting any notifications for it.

Also, there are two types of notifications -
Campaign board: notifies you when a new topic is created for the campaign and if a reply is made to any topic in the campaign.
Topic: notifies you when a reply is made to the topic

Most likely if you are a player in the campaign you will only want to use the Campaign board notify. The Topic notify is ideal for people not belonging to the game who want to follow a thread but maybe not all the topics like OOC or what have you.

After it was completed it seemed like Topic notify was not really needed but its been built so may as well leave it in.

I am considering creating another notification for the entire campaign. So basically any time the campaign is updated (blog, wiki, or board) you get notified. This would be neat to see how many subscribers a campaign has.

Also note that all the notifications only send one email until you visit the board or topic (depending on which subscription you have). So if you subscribe to a campaign board and 10 new topics are created, you only get the email for the first one.

I still need to implement some sort of indication that a topic has new messages (like here the little blue 'New' icon). But I think this can suffice for now as I need to move forward on some other items.

good thinking on splitting up the notifications like you did.  That will make it nice for people like you said who just want to watch a particular thread and not all the jabber.  Nice thinking

I got my first notifications, this morning in the e-mail. 

Both linked back to the thread correctly. Very good work, there.

The campaign notification seems to notify for any topic reply, even topics you don't have permission to see.  Also, the notification does link to the topic, but not the post, which means that when the post is 4 pages into a topic, the notify links you to the first page of a topic.

Yes, this became apparent when more people started using the groups. I am still in the site redesign process but it has turned into a redevelopment process . Not a complete redevelopment but it is allowing me to re-examine all the code as I edit the screens. The message board is next on my list and probably the largest task. I plan to make modifications to the notifications, dice rolling, spoilers, etc.

And hopefully I will get it working to send you to the correct posts as opposed to the start of the topic.

Thanks for the heads up though. I was wondering when someone was going to mention it

Since I go to the boards, often, I don't use the notify.  MythKnight told me that he got some email notifications of private threads, which he didn't have access.  He thought he had hit the notify when he could see the thread.  I thought I deleted all the 'private' threads and created new ones when it was working.  So, I didn't think he did that.  To prove that I could see private threads, from the notify, I hit the campaign notify on Second Darkness, MK's campaign.  I asked him to post something in a private thread.  I got one email from one of the private threads and not the other.  I think it also has something in there to just notify you once, until you hit the board again, and not send a notify for every single post.

Yet, it really isn't an issue for me.  It just lets me know that private threads are not really 100% private, right now.  Oh, the notify from the private thread, does have a link to the private thread, but you can only access the private thread if you have permission.  Otherwise, it just sends you to the campaign board.

That is correct that you only get one notification. You must visit the board again to before receiving more.
It shouldn't be terribly difficult to correct this issue when I get to it. Its just a matter of getting there
